Macesport managing director Paul Mace has welcomed football’s decision to wear their poppies with pride on shirts up and down the country to commemorate Remembrance Day.Mace was personally responsible for ensuring Leicester City – then COO at the Walkers Stadium club - were the first club seven years ago to wear a poppy on their shirts – in a Premier League fixture with Blackburn Rovers.
“Its great to see that for each of the past seven years increasing numbers of clubs have worn special poppy shirts,” said Mace.
“It is a highly simple but extremely visually impactful way in which the football family can show their support for our armed forces.
“I recall that at Leicester seven years ago we wore the poppy shirts for two games and after winning at Manchester City manager Micky Adams came up to me and asked if we could wear them for the rest of the season because they were our lucky charm !!.
“We were inundated with letters from servicemen throughout the world and I am personally delighted to see that this has now become an established fixture on the football calendar.”
